    Streets of Dublin

I have had the opportunity to spend some days in Dublin, Ireland and it has been with mixed feelings.

It was my first visit to Dublin and to be honest the first impression was that I do not want to come back here again. It is a city that partially was in ruins mixed with new modern offices buildings in glass and steel. Everything was in high contrast. Large shopping streets with high end stores and just a corner from that, someone has arranged a temporary sleeping place out of cardboard boxes for the night.
That said I would be very happy to come back again to be able to see a Dublin back on its feet economically, starting to rebuild everything that was broken.

The intention for my visit was business so I didn´t have that much time to spend on walking around on the streets. Anyway a couple of hours out walking are better than nothing, at least better than the inside of a conference room at the hotel…

    thru the windows in dublin

My first impression of Dublin: This is a modern city of steel and glass. Everything looked like it was build last year and that the optimism was in the air.

    butcher in dublin

Out on the street it was a quite cool mix of shops and stores. Large famous brands had stores next door to old-fashioned butchers and pubs. This butcher had a nice mosaic entrance and the offer of the day handwritten on the window.

    windowshopping in dublin

A lot if the buildings had rich décor and were painted in bright colors. It looked like someone back in the days really cared for the look and feel of the streets. This had unfortunately changed… The will to do it might still exist but the means to get it done was in most cases missing. I didn’t manage to find out what was behind these windows in the Temple bar district, but it definitely wasn´t a “normal” shop.

    wallpainting in dublin

This is a good example one of the many painted hoses in Dublin’s back alleys. There were several houses that were painted in a graffiti like style that made the whole street just pop out from the ordinary brick red or concrete gray.

waiting for the buss in dublin

This is early morning queuing for the buss. It looked like there was an unwritten rule saying that the safety distance between each person is one pole or more.

    waiting alone in dublin

    alley in dublin

As soon as you took a step away from the main streets there was a maze of small streets. Most places looked abandoned and it was a quite depressing to see all hoses that someone a long time ago took the time and care to build, now was left to their own devices. Not even the bright colors could cheer it up.

    bicycle sale in dublin

To me this was a typical Dublin scene. This was a house that here I Sweden anyway, shouldn’t be suited for a public store. But here it was perfect for a second hand bicycle shop. All you hade to do was to claim the lot, paint the house and put up a nicely painted plank around it all!

    dark alley in dublin

If you were brave enough, the back alleys continued forever keeping a lot of small secret stores away from the tourists.

    abandon shop in dublin

Hard to know if someone was building it up or tearing it down…

    keeping you out in dubliin

This is just a few minutes walk from my hotel out on the Point near the O2 arena. Apparently it wasn´t the O2 arena anymore and during my stay the new 3 (three tele company) sign was mounted on the wall. I do not now if it was planned, but it took them tree days to mount the sign.

This building was on the way up, hopefully. It looked however quite abandoned…

    lonley cat in dublin

This was one of many places in the need of some love and care. When I stood there to take the image, the small cat studied my every move. Maybe I was the first person that stopped for more than two seconds. Can you spot him?

    newspaper sale in dublin

Old classic newsstand! Not everyday you see this, not back home in Stockholm anyway. This salesman had the possibility to read newspapers from all around the world in perhaps 20 different languages, I wonder if he reads a lot of different magazines or if he reads the same one everyday.

The two lads to the right seemed to have more than enough time to plan how to spend the day.

sleeping on the street in dublin

Even if you have bright colors on your shelter it must be more than depressing. Not having a safe and secure place to spend your night is something that I can´t even imagine. Unfortunately this wasn´t a rare sight and you could see people sleeping on benches and in stairways al over Dublin.

waiting on the bridge in dublin

On one of the bridges over the canal dividing Dublin in a north and a south half, this man was sitting everyday (at least on the four days I was there but I would be surprised if it was coincidence) with a small cup in his hand. Not saying a word he just sat there hoping for some change coins from by passers.

    tanisawaphoto-1003548

On the same bridge as the man was sitting there was a lot of so called lovelocks. Couples write their names on a lock and together lock their love, in this case on the bridge. There were a lot of locks on this bridge and on a lot of other places to here in Dublin so there is obvious a lot of love in this city behind the crumbling facade.

I hope that if I return to Dublin in a couple of years all half ready abandoned building were finished and that the city was cleaned up and was given a total makeover of new paint. On top of that it would be nice of the number of locks on the bridges had doubled!

    Best regards

  • Fotomaraton 2014

    Fotomaraton 2014

    Fotomaraton 2014

I have just completed a photo marathon here in Stockholm… and to be honest it was quite challenging.

The rules are simple. You have one camera and during a period of 24 hours you have to take 24 images. The trick is that you do not know in advance the theme for all the 24 images. You only get four themes at the time and then you need to get to the next “check point” to get your next four themes. So at the start that was on Saturday at noon you got four themes and the location of the next check point. And then you had four hours to figure out what to capture, find the right location, motive. All images must be in the right order so you couldn´t take a picture on theme two before theme one. You are not allowed to edit the images in anyway after taken but you can use any build in functions and filters that the camera has, like black and white, sepia toning and so on.
Anyway, the challenge in this was to keep up a high motivation and creativity during the long 24 hour period… Since I´m not 20 anymore the “after” 00:00 hours was quite hard… I´m used to go to bed… but this night I couldn´t… Luckily I had my photo buddy Joel with me. Without him I would probably just fell asleep on a bench or at McDonalds.

So here are my images, some good and some really “not good”… I have to blame the missing my beauty sleep.

So here are my images taken during the long and sometimes cold 24 hours…

    1: Photo marathon

    fotomaraton 2014 Fotomaraton

My idea on this one was just that I didn´t want to take a photo on the starting flag, the crowd waiting to get their themes, like a lot of others did. This image on another participant was just there for a second and then he walked of, but it was enough for me.

    2: Handmade

    fotomaraton 2014 handgjort

This is takes under St.Eriksbron in Stockholm and is famous for its many graffiti and street artists that hang out here, showing expressing their art. This image is taken with a 30 sec shutter time and I running around with a hand held flash.

3: We have all been kids before

fotomaraton 2014 vi är alla barn i början

My initial idea was to capture someone doing, or rather failing on a skateboard. But I skipped that since I couldn’t find anyone willing to crash in front of the camera…

    4: Haircut

    fotomaraton 2014 frilla

At least it´s not just another crazy haircut…

    5: The Swedish word “Lagom”

    fotomaraton 2014 lagon

Initially I was imaging this as a woman carrying a handbag with her dog inside of it. However this was the best I found. It didn´t feel right to ask her to put the dog in a bag…

    6: Summer flirt

    fotomaraton 2014 sommarflirt

Oh no, this one was a bad one…

    7: Ocean

    fotomaraton 2014 hav

How do you take an inspirational image in Stockholm at the ocean… I guess this was the challenge.

    8: Young in the city

    fotomaraton 2014 ung i stan

At the same time as the photo marathon was going on there was a youth festival, so it should be quite easy to capture something some inspirational, but it wasn´t… It was hard to capture both youth AND the city in the same image.

    9: Party

    fotomaraton 2014 fest

My first initial thought was to capture something with a lot of color and movement but it didn´t quite end up that way. I like this one, even if it might be hard to connect it to the actual theme, party.

    10: Queer

    fotomaraton 2014 queer

Quite hard theme… I had no instant idea of what to capture but my thought went in the drag show direction. Then I just saw this image. It´s calm and relaxed and turn out really good with the reflection from the street light.

    11: In the backseat

    fotomaraton 2014 i baksätet

This turned out to be image of a man left in the backseat of the society rather than a couple making out in the backseat of a car.

    12: The shadow side

    fotomaraton 2014 skuggsidan

This didn´t really turned out as I wanted. My idea was to get more of the colorful light from the building behind with and less of the foreground, but it was quite hard to move the stadium closer. 30 sec exposure time and again running around with a flash is behind this look.

    13: Enlightened

    fotomaraton 2014 upplyst

Just an image of the lights from the city. At 2pm creativity is not always on top, at least not mine…

    14: Better late than ever

fotomaraton 2014 bättre sent än aldrig

Like the image even though it might not quite match the theme. (and yes that’s me on the box)

    15: Dude

    fotomaraton 2014 snubbe

All that I knew was that I didn´t want to take a picture of any cool dude on the street. When I passed this man sleeping while sitting under his blanket, I thought that he would be a better dude than a cool one.

    16: Spaceship

    fotomaraton 2014 rymdskepp

Ok, this must be the most pointless image I took during the marathon… To my defense I must have looked like a ufo while taking the image. This is what you get when taking a picture of a neon sign while spinning around…

    17: Work

    fotomaraton 2014 kneg

Ok, this one is not one of the best either. The construction site was totally empty so my photo buddy had to step in to do some work…

    18: Periphery

    fotomaraton 2014 i perferin

This one was quite funny to take. It´s me on to the left (in the periphery) and to be able to take the image and be in it I had to run, a lot. The self timer on my camera is 12 seconds and it took me almost 11 second to run to the bench. So in just one second I had to sit down and look relaxed. It took a couple of times to get it right so for me this was the marathon part in the competition.

    19: What time is it?

    fotomaraton 2014 vad är klockan

Oh no what a bad one…

    20: Travel

    fotomaraton 2014 på väg

I wonder how many other images the jury got in from the train station… So here is another one. The reflection turned out good, too bad that there was a group of people standing behind him.

    21: Meeting place

    fotomaraton 2014 mötesplats

Some lack of inspiration, but I like this one anyway.

    22: Old meets new

    fotomaraton 2014 gamalt möter nytt

This is taken in the old town in Stockholm. Beautiful buildings that some people just can´t resist covering with ugly tags…

    23: Slussen

    fotomaraton 2014 slussen

I didn´t have any idea of what to capture or if I wanted to capture something at Slussen at all. The one thing I felt capturing was this one. I liked the combination of the guy sitting bellow the stair, the curved shape and the mix of light and shadow.

    24: Your participant number

    fotomaraton 2014 mitt deltagarnummer

Well let´s say that I just wanted to be able to finish the photo marathon and go home…

To wrap it all up it was a lot of fun!

Will I do it again next year?

    Probably…

  • Hard not to love Skåne

    Hard not to love Skåne

    Hard not to love Skåne

I have spent a little over eight years of my life living in Helsingborg at the northwestern part Skåne. During that time I didn´t appreciate the countryside as much as I do now. When I could see the beautiful landscape every day, I simply didn´t see it. Now days whenever I have the opportunity to spend some days in Skåne I just love it. The southeast part of Skåne (called Österlen) is well famous for the landscape that contains a mix of rolling hills and endless fields of everything from corn to wheat. No wonder that this is the center for all Swedish handcrafting artists.

    Bjärsjölagårds limestone quarry

    Bjärsjölagårds limestone quarry

This day we made a short trip to an old limestone quarry not far from the house. The quarry was last used sometime around 1900 and all traces from the activities at that time was long gone, except the now water filled hole in the ground. The weather that day was windy but the walls of the quarry and the surrounding woodland made the perfect wind protection!

    Bjärsjölagårds limestone quarry

This is apparently what´s hiding under our feet. Layers and layers of limestone. I think that this place is special though. Most of the ground here in Skåne I think contains just gravel, sand and soil.

    wood anemone

Thousands of vitsippor (wood anemone) covered the ground painting it with a fresh green tone sparkled with white stars. To me this is a safe sign that the spring is finally here!

    kids at the slopes

The kids where running up and down the slopes at the side of the quarry. On the ground there were a lot a fossils of old sea shells, plants and other strange things. My youngest one made what I thought was the victory sign, but in this picture I can clearly see that it’s not, rock on girl!

    dark woods

Usually takes a while to figure out why this photo looks a little bit strange. Can you figure it out?

    Easter in Skåne 2014

Time again to publish some new photos. I have been terrible bad at updating the blog but other things has always come between me and the blog. You know, busy doing nothing… Anyway, here comes the first post from Skåne.
During the Easter the whole family went down to Skåne to spend some time during the kid’s holiday. The weather during Easter 2014 will be remembered as one of the best ever! Lovely sunshine and up to +20. Not bad at all considered that last Easter there was snow on the ground… So armed with the Leica M9 we went out in the sunshine.

    birches in skåne

This is taken in the woods not far from the summerhouse in the small “town” of Tolånga. You probably wouldn’t call it a town, more like a village since there are only around twenty houses or so.

    ella picking stensöta

Ella is picking something that in Sweden is called Harmynta. I do not know the English name but it is a small white flower and the leaves is eatable and taste a little sour.

    stensöta

I tried to take a closer picture so that someone might recognize the plant and send me the correct name.

    bokskog skåne

Just by looking at the trees here makes me see treehouses everywhere. How cool wouldn’t it be to have a treehouse high up in those trees! Imagine climbing up there, bring coffee the camera and look when the sun goes down. Must be more the spectacular!

    biches

More down to earth and definitely clo    ser to the ground the birches glows green in the sunlight. Good news for everyone loving the spring and bad news for all the allergic people out there, including me…

    More posts are comming soon!

  • Yanaka cemetery

    Yanaka cemetery

    Yanaka Cemetery

Just outside Ueno subway station you will find the Yanaka cemetery. I have already published a photo from here but I thought that the place deserves some more photos since it is so beautiful.

The cemetery itself takes up around 100000m2 and has over 7000 graves so it is quite big so if you want to see it all, it takes a day or two… The cemetery is mostly famous for the main road in the middle that has large cherry trees on both sides that completely cover the sky and ground in white and pink flower if you time the season right.

    Yanaka cemetery temple

This is the temple area that is located in the beginning of the cemetery, if you arrive here by the subway. On this photo it looks quite empty, believe me it was not. Hundreds of people walking around or sitting down reading or just relaxing everywhere… except when I took this photo. I somehow manage to capture a photo with no one in it.

    Yanaka cemetery graves

Yellow leaves covered the ground and gave everything a warm golden shine. Just perfect for this place!

    Yanaka cemetery cat

A small guardian was sitting in the sun just looking at all the people wandering by.
I only spent an hour or so at the cemetery but if I have had more time I would have bought a lunch box and parked myself at a bench.

Perhaps next time I´ll bring more company then just my Leica.

  • Gotland at it´s best

    Gotland at it´s best

    Vacation on Gotland

During the summer of 2013 we rented a house for a week to get away from the city and to be able to spend some time near the ocean (the Baltic sea may not count as ocean but you get the point…)

The house was located on the northern part of Gotland in the small town of Fårösund. This is also the place where the ferry over to Fårö is located. Every morning hundreds of cars lined up to wait for the ferry over and there where signed beside the road that gave you a rough estimate of the total queuing time. On the one furthers away from the ferry it stood “Two hours to the ferry”. Since I´m a person with a quite small patience I got gray hair by just reading the sign…
Anyway, when you have taken the time to travel to Gotland, Fårö can´t be missed. We aimed to be the first in line for the ferry so we had a quite early start that morning. But better to be up early then to spend the day in the car, queuing.

    gotland windy

The scenery here at Fårö is dramatic. It is located quite a bit out in the Baltic Sea so the wind is always present and it rips over the land and can sometime make it hard to just stand still. Especially if you are just five years old…

    shadow beach gotland

The whole island is made of chalk so there is a thin layer of white chalk powder over everything. The car slowly turns gray and so does your clothes and everything not already stone colored.

    raukar fårö

There are some very nice and windsurf friendly beaches here at Fårö, but I like the ones with a little more drama. This not so surf friendly beach really shows how the wind and sea carves it way in to the chalk and forms the some of the coolest formations. The larges rock formations is called raukar and can be as high as +20 meter or so.

    Helgumannens fiskeläger gotland

These are small fishing huts called Helgumannens fishing station and must be one of the most photographed object here at Fårö.

    gotland fårösund

One could really get use to sit on the dock, looking out over the water and just enjoy the amazing sunset, just wow!

  • Malcolm taking a leap of faith

Malcolm taking a leap of faith

    Flying balloon with Malcolm B

So this is a series of photos from a movie shoot with the Swedish rap artist Malcolm B. This is one part that is going to end up in a coming music video starring Malcolm B.

Today’s mission is to climb to 9000 feet and that altitude, Malcolm will be doing a parachute tandem jump from the balloon. Quite spectacular and not that many persons have made jumps from a hot air balloon, especially at 9000 feet. On top of that, this will be Malcolms first jump ever…

All photos are taken with Canon 5d II and EF 24-70 f/2.8L

    Balloon

First balloon takes to the sky. This one is filled with helium and is only used to see the wind direction and speed as the balloon takes to the sky. It is quite often great difference in both wind speed and direction depending on the altitude. It´s like the wind exists in different layers on top of each other and not as on big block of air above the ground.

Posing in the hot air balloon

Some of the film crew inside the balloon to take some photos before the air inside gets too hot.

    Fire in the balloon

And here comes the heat that will make everything fly. I think this balloon produces aprox 3.000.000 watt of heat and my stove at home 3000…

    Waiting in the harness

Maceo is al set for the ride of his life although he looked a little bit too calm to me. He will be dangling his feet strapped in this harness to take stills and video shoots from outside the balloon… at 9000 feet…

    Harness lines balloon

Here is a better picture of the world’s highest swing. The ropes is attached to the top of the balloon and then goes down on the side to the harness. Once we leave the ground there is nothing in the way between him and the basket. Everything for a clear shot and no way to get him to the basket until we are on the ground again.

    Nervous waiting before take off

Malcolm is trying to keep the demons away from the head… “look cool, I can do this!”. Aint no wifey doesn’t look that convinced… but he was cool!

Malmcolm what have i signed up to do

This is the face of a man thinking, “Oh my god, this is it…”

    Both balloons in the air

Take off. We started first and the other team is following close behind. In just a minute or so everything get so small so fast!

    Harnes from balloon

Maceo is preparing. This around 2500 feet so we are quite close to the ground. I can imagine that he felt kind a small sitting there with nothing to hold on to.

    Harness from balloon up high

We are now getting close to our jump altitude so now it is time for the jumpers to get the right mind set.

    Malmcolm lost contact

“Are you sure about this?” It was a little bit hard to make contact with Malcolm. He was so “concentrated” (not scared to death at all…)

    Malcolms last step

We got clearance to make the jump so this is it!
Since I didn´t have a parachute, there is no pictures from the actual jump…

Heating up the balloon berfore moving

Landed safely on the ground. Everyone was releaved and happy after another great flight with a lot of great photo and video material for the film crew.
It was late and it was cold. We did however decided to move the balloon after landing to on with the heat again!

Spending the day with the camera near the small lake by Ueno Zoo

So this is how December starts in Tokyo. Coming from Sweden it feels like a small taste of spring 2014. Before this trip to Japan I have googled what the weather would be like so I knew that it would be +15 Celsius, but I still got a little bit surprised by the warm weather. Thin jacket and t-shirt was quite enough. Equipped with the Leica M9 and the 50mm I head out in the sun. These photos are taken around the small lake near Ueno Zoo. It´s a nice place to get some green touch on your visit to Tokyo.

    tanisawaphoto-1001920

If you can sit by yourself for a minute and not packed on the subway you better take that chance. So make sure that it is at least 5 meter of free space on both sides when finding the perfect spot by the walk path.

    tanisawaphoto-1001572

This part of the lake is usually covered with large green leaves and beautiful pink lotus flowers. At this time of the season its hard to imagine how perfect this will be in just a couple of months.

  • Looking ahead

    Looking ahead

Looking ahead through the lens of my Leica

Apparently I have a thing for taking photos looking like the ones bellow. Symmetrical with a fixed point or direction towards the horizon. I have never thought of it before and I do not intentionally go out and look for this type of motive. But I have tons of pictures looking like this so I apparently like the angle and the symmetrical element.

These photos are takes with my Leica M9 and 50 summicron.

    tanisawaphoto-1001418

In this the line towards the horizon is broken up but one could with ease imagine where all the lines would end up.

    tanisawaphoto-1001447

Like in this one. Shadows, forms, colors and the lines.

    tanisawaphoto-1001590

In a perfect world I would have waited 0,3 sec so he and his shadow would line up a little more even…

    tanisawaphoto-1001442

The national museum of modern art in Tokyo has a perfectly designed entrance, and on top of that some really cool exhibits!

    Check it out

    tanisawaphoto-1001600

On the narrow streets underneath the subway lines going from Akihabara there are a countless number of shops and restaurants.

    tanisawaphoto-1001720

Even this small fish market in Sapporo I managed to capture a frame looking like this. Thins to the left that lines up with thing to he right…

    tanisawaphoto-1001842

And in this shopping mall, the same photo again.

    tanisawaphoto-1001858

Ok, this one deviates a little bit from the norm but its quite similar.

    tanisawaphoto-1001879

On my way to Yanaka. I was told that It should represent the “old” Tokyo. How it looked 50 years ago. I make a post later with some more photos, but I was a little bit disappointed. I do not now if I was told wrong or if I just had the wrong image in my mined of how it should look…

    tanisawaphoto-1001689

This is taken from Sapporo Tower. Again the same lineup, apart from the high point.

    tanisawaphoto-1001874

Yanaka cemetery. Beautiful place. Quiet, calm and millions of miles away from Tokyo’s neon and noise. Great escape only a couple of stations away from it all (and this perfect lineup!)

Now when I have noticed that I usually take these type of motive I need to figure out how to take better ones, or how to change my direction…
